Forklift Truck Training Program
In order to receive certification as a forklift driver, you must undergo training on an industrial-powered lift truck, or forklift. The training program should be specific to the forklift type and attachments that you would be using on the job. Training must also reflect the atmosphere in which you would be working. Forklift safety should be a top priority for both the trainer and the operator trainee.
General Credentials
Before assuming any operator duties, all forklift drivers should undergo both training and certification. Basic credentials for using a forklift include an age minimum of eighteen years and the physical capacity to control and operate the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The top concern of any forklift operator must be the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the equipment or its attachments. Pedestrians should always have the right of way, and forklift operators must honk their horns when working near pedestrians or at crosswalks or intersections.
Weather Conditions
Many accidents involving forklifts happen at loading docks. These areas become hazardous if rain leaks in through open dock doors leading to a very slippery floor. Wet floor conditions create a hazard and drivers have to know potential dangers when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Certification programs for forklift operators consist of both practical training and classroom instruction that can be tailored for the particular needs of each work environment. Training must be completed on the forklift type and attachments that will be used by the trainee in the workplace.
Accidents
Each year about one hundred people die in forklift mishaps. There are 100,000 forklift injuries reported each and every year. Most of these accidents are avoidable with correct operator training and attention to safety.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklifts provide versatility and height. These models are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm that extends over the top of the truck. The arm, or crane, is called a telescopic boom. The boom allows the person using it to maintain a high degree of control while raising the load to great heights. Regular forklifts aren't able to move the load away from and towards the cab of the forklift, while a telescopic forklift can allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is normally used in both construction and agriculture. It is better for applications where greater lift and control is necessary.
In situations requiring high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments called forklift carton clamp attachments are better. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings that enable the operator to use uniform clamping force when picking up a load. It is available with a backrest that protects the loads from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is utilized for storing systems which don't utilize pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forks on the forklift. This type of system is useful for overseas shipments and intra-corporate deliveries.
A lift platform that is designed to raise staff is referred to as a Man Basket. It attaches to the forklift forks and a chain or strap is used to attach the basket to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the employees from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the safety harness of the worker.
